Thinking about studying marine biology?
Before you commit to a degree, it’s worth understanding what the subject is really like.
Because it’s not just whales, sharks and dolphins.
In this blog, you’ll learn:
• What marine biology actually involves
• What you’ll study at university
• Why most people misunderstand it
• How to start learning the basics before you commit

A Quick Note From Me
My name is Ben.
I studied Applied Marine Biology at Bangor University, and since graduating I’ve worked on the Great Barrier Reef.
I’ve been exactly where you are — trying to figure out if marine biology was the right path.
It’s an exciting decision… but also a big one.

The Biggest Misconception About Marine Biology
Let’s clear this up straight away.
Marine biology is not just:
Whales. Sharks. Dolphins.
That’s what draws people in.
But the reality is very different.
A lot of what you’ll study includes:
• Statistics
• Data analysis
• Oceanography
• Microscopic organisms (like algae)
• Lab work and dissections
It’s still fascinating — but it’s also real science.
And if you don’t expect that going in, it can catch you off guard.
You must remember "Marine Biology" is a massive word covering a lot of topics. Some you will love, others you will dislike. I suggest you dig deep into the branches of Marine Biology. To see what gets you going.
What You’re Actually Learning
Marine biology is really about understanding how the ocean works as a system.
Not just the animals in it.
You start to see things differently:
• How oxygen is produced in the ocean
• How ecosystems are connected
• How climate and ocean systems interact
• How small organisms drive massive processes
It’s less about individual animals…
And more about the bigger picture of the ocean itself.
Your passions will present themselves as you study the canvas of marine biology from a broader understanding.
Personally, I loved learning about the polar regions and deep sea gigantism. Something that if you were to ask me before university I would of had no interest in, until I understood the workings of our oceans enough to fully understand how incredible it is.
Why This Matters Before You Choose a Degree
This is where most people go wrong, and I do not want you to be another drop out.
They choose marine biology because they love the ocean…
But they’ve never actually experienced what studying it feels like.
So when they hit:
• Heavy science
• Data work
• Complex concepts
It becomes overwhelming.
Not because they’re not capable — but because they weren’t prepared.
I suggest signing up to Ocean Mastery to begin today learning about the ocean through new eyes. Where we break down complex process of our oceans into simple to understand bitesize emails every day. It covers an awful lot and I enjoyed putting it together to give to you. So please take me up on that offer.
You can also go ahead and look at the university syllabus you're thinking of undertaking and researching yourself each module and more about it.
A Better Way to Approach It
Before you commit to university, it makes sense to get a feel for the subject first.
Understand some of the basics.
See if you actually enjoy learning it.
That’s exactly why I created Ocean Mastery.
It’s a free course built from a lot of what I learned at university — simplified into clear, easy-to-follow lessons.
I don’t cover everything (that would take years).
But I cover enough to help you:
• Understand how the ocean works
• Feel more connected to it
• Appreciate it on a deeper level
• Decide if marine biology is right for you

Who This Is Really For
This isn’t just for future marine biologists.
It’s for:
• People considering studying marine biology
• People who love the ocean and want to understand it
• People who want a head start before university
Or even just people who want to see the ocean differently.
Final Thought
Marine biology is an incredible path.
But it’s not what most people expect.
If you take the time to understand it properly first…
You’ll go into it more confident, more prepared, and far more likely to enjoy it.
And whether you choose university or not —
Understanding the ocean is always worth it.
