Under The Surface: Seacret Founder

This is me, Ben. I gained my degree in Marine Biology back in October of 2021. From one of the worlds leading universities of ocean science, Bangor University.
University
This photo of me diving off the Falmouth coast, north of Jamaica, during my second year. Where I realised there was nothing to see. Diving here was nothing but brown algae and desolate land. No coral and sparse populations of fish it was a tough realisation, one that I had not fully understood at the time.
3rd Year began and by fate I had lectures from Dr. Skov and Dr. Williams on Jamaica's current state used as case studies in their lectures, the countries past and current health.
Immediately the connections were made from what I had seen and was being taught. My dissertation then became focused on Jamaica and its relationship between coralline algae and herbivorous fish populations as key indicators of coral recovery, to fully understand if Jamaica was in a state of recovery or not. This was in depth and covered 10+ years of historic events and over 500 observational dives from REEFS database, the dissertation quickly got into the economic impact the reef has on the country. This became a real eye opener to me as to how important a role our oceans play and the true delicate balance it holds.
Post University
Since university I have volunteered with the wildlife trust here in the UK, taking part in water testing for phosphate levels in runoffs leading to the Liverpool bay estuary and became an ORCA qualified marine mammal surveyor, through their ORCA watchers programme.
Struggling to break into the marine and science industry, I have decided to move to Australia as of November 2023 to seek more experience and open pathways and ideas, for myself and the development of Seacret.
Seacret
Struggling to break into the field, after various interviews and tests. I took it upon myself to create my own career within the Marine industry. I believe everyone has such a huge potential and ability. Seacret had been in my mind for two years prior any action, the idea that I can take and share an idea with people just like me and make a real difference in the world, I could not shake. Literally creating something out of nothing, only needing hard work and determination.
