Understanding the Intriguing Behaviours of Humpback Whales: Tail Slapping, Breaching, Spyhopping, Pec Slapping

Estimated Reading Time: 10-15 minutes

The oceans cover more than seventy percent of our Earth, and a plethora of fascinating creatures flourish within it. Among them, there are few as captivating as humpback whales. These charismatic megafauna of the deep enchant us with their sheer bodies size, distinctive songs, and intriguing behaviours. In this blog post, going to observe some behaviours exhibited by humpback whales some of the largest ocean animals - from tail slapping to breaching, spyhopping, and pec slapping.

Before we dive deep into the ocean, let's first take a moment to consider these amazing creatures' conservation status. It may surprise you to know that not too long ago, humpback whales were on the brink of extinction due to commercial whaling. Thanks to valiant international efforts, these marine giants are now protected under the Endangered Species Act, with groups like Ocean Conservancy and Australia’s Marine Conservation Society playing a major role in their recovery.

Humpback Whale Behaviour 101: Understanding their Conduct

Breaching: It's hard to imagine any marine animal weighing 40 tons and reaching up to 50 feet in length leaping out of the water, but that's precisely what humpbacks do. This behaviour is called breaching, and scientists suggest that it could be a form of communication, a way to dislodge parasites, or simply a display of physical prowess. Sightings of breaching humpback whales creating spectacles in the North Pacific Ocean, South Pacific Ocean, and Arctic Ocean are not uncommon.

Pec & Tail Slapping: Another captivating behaviour of these Marine Mammals is the percussive display known formally as tail or pec slapping. In this striking display, humpback whales slap their tails or pectoral fins against the water surface—creating a thunderous sound that reverberates across the oceans surface. The exact significance of this behaviour is still a subject of intense scientific study, with theories ranging from a form of communication to a method of stunning prey. After seeing this behaviour first hand between mother and calf it is truly breathtaking.

I worked as a deckhand for ZigZag on the Whitsundays and every winter mothers come to give birth. Watching a mother and calf communicate via pec and tail slapping is one of the most beautiful sites.

Spyhopping: The intriguing list doesn't stop there. An equivalent to our peeking over the fence to see what’s happening on the other side is the spy hopping behaviour. During spy hopping, the humpback lifts its head and body vertically out of the water, enabling it to get a panoramic view of its surroundings on the water’s surface. Sure gives a new meaning to keeping an eye on the neighbour's, doesn't it?

As amazing as these behaviours are, they only scratch the surface when it comes to understanding these complex marine mammals.

The Threats Facing Humpback Whales: The Critical Role of Marine Conservation

As much as we're charmed by their behaviours, humpback whales face serious challenges in their fight for survival. From the insidious spread of Micro Plastics in the Ocean to the impact of Climate Change in the form of Ocean Acidification and Global Warming, humpback whales navigate through a minefield of threats every day.

The importance of Marine Conservation can't be overemphasised in securing healthier oceans and ensuring the continued magnificence of our marine wildlife.

As the guardians of our oceans, efforts to combat Polluting Oceans are inextricably linked with the survival of humpback whales and indeed the health of the entire marine ecosystem.
