Once the feeding season concludes, Humpback whales migrate to warmer waters to breed and give birth. Notable breeding grounds include:
Hawaiian Islands: The waters off Maui are a crucial nursery for many humpback whales. They offer protection and a relatively safe environment for calves to grow. Whitsundays: Humpback whales migrate to the Islands of the Whitsundays every year, coming from the feeding grounds of the Antarctic. I had the pleasure of working on the Great Barrier Reef, off the coast of Airlie Beach around the Islands. Here I observed Humpback whale behaviour and worked as a deckhand and Marine Biologist. Pregnant females make their way early in the winter months, and males follow shortly after in the winter season. Allowing for birthing and calf growth and the reproduction cycle to start again.
The migration to breeding grounds is not without its challenges. Climate change is altering water temperatures and disrupting the delicate balance of these ecosystems. As the planet warms, we must be vigilant on how these changes will impact migration patterns and breeding success for humpback whales.
The Threats Facing Humpback Whales
As an advocate for ocean protection, I feel it is essential to address the significant threats that jeopardise the survival of humpback whales. These include:
1. Polluting Oceans: The increasing levels of ocean plastics, especially microplastics in the ocean, pose grave dangers to marine life. Humpback whales, while primarily filter feeders, are susceptible to consuming contaminated prey that can lead to toxic build-up in their bodies.
2. Ship Strikes: As shipping traffic increases, the risk of collision with large vessels grows. This has become a pressing concern, particularly in areas where whales are known to migrate.
3. Climate Change: The impact of global warming extends beyond rising sea levels. As temperatures rise, prey species may shift their ranges, leaving humpback whales struggling to find food sources. Moreover, ocean acidification impacts the entire marine ecosystem, further complicating matters for these cetaceans.
4. Habitat Loss: The destruction of critical breeding and feeding habitats, including coral reefs, exacerbates the challenges faced by humpback whales.
